My subjective experience disagrees with your theoretical objectivity. More specifically, in deep hypnotic work, you often find that the condition the subject wants to change isn't actually the problem but is instead an adaptive mechanism that was adopted to counteract a deeper crisis, which obligates the therapist NOT to change the condition the subject wanted to change.

However, when the desired outcome is ecologically sounds (not causing secondary triggers to be fired) the specific behaviors that must be installed to correct the condtion are often precisely the changes that the subject did not want to make.

One example that just occurred today. A friend called in obvious distress in the middle of a fit of rage over some inescapable conditions in his life. It was only by causing him to forget the offense that was triggering his rage that he was able to get that rage under control...but that "forgiveness" (for that was how it felt when he was in his conscious state) was the last thing he wanted to do.

He was in fact married to his rage and unable to disassociate the ex-wife from all of the subsequent traumas that had nothing to do with her (she was a bitch but that is off point).

So, by causing him to forget his rage at his ex, which he was incapable of doing on his own, I was able to trick him into calming the fuck down a perfect example of how a hypnotist can cause someone to do something they do not want to do.
